f For GSA Transportation, based in Wayne, Mich., seamless integration with its dispatch system has been an important benefit from its recent mo- bile communications upgrade. "With the integration of the Rand McNally units into Prophesy Dis- patch, we have been able to stream- line the communication process from the drivers all the way through to our customers," says Mark Simpson, GSA vice president. GSA is a full-service logistics provider established in 1983 that runs 30 sleepers and 10 day cabs from a home terminal in Wayne and a satellite terminal in Nashville. The company generally runs outbound from Michigan to nearby states such as Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Its trucks pull 53-foot food-grade dry vans loaded with products such as juice and sugar, as well as paper and auto parts. The fleet runs truckload, except for within a 50-mile radius of their terminals where it handles LTL deliv- eries out of its warehouses. With the new streamlined com- munication system, when a driver check calls from any location, that information is transmitted via email to the customer. The information is also available online 24 hours a day for customers to review. "We have seen an increase in driver communication as well as a decrease in human error by not having to manipulate data several times before it reaches the customer," Simpson says. Another efficiency boost comes in the load information being sent to the driver. "We simply send all in- formation to the driver with a single mouse click. We are already seeing the return on our investment." Better navigation features were also a reason GSA opted for Rand McNally's TND-760 mobile devices. "That is one of the major reasons that we went with the Rand sys- tem," Simpson says. "The feedback we have heard from our drivers is that they love the routing. They no longer need to have their own GPS in the truck." – Jim Beach, Technology Editor 72 HDT • MAY 2014 www.truckinginfo.com Tech Bytes GSA streamlines communication via integration GSA Transportation has improved efficiency with an updated mobile communications system that integrates seamlessly with the company's dispatch system. t e c h b y t e s _ m a y . i n d d 7 2 tech bytes_may.indd 72 4 / 2 9 / 1 4 4 : 4 4 P M 4/29/14 4:44 PM
