24 HDT • DECEMBER 2014 www.truckinginfo.com O ctober North American Class 8 truck orders were an astounding 45,600 units, the second-largest order month in history. The numbers aren't as impressive as they seem, due to OEM sales activity that encouraged fleets to place their expected requirement orders early for the first half of 2015. It is estimated this strategy prob- ably inflated the order number over 40%. However, orders would have still been very good for the month of October even without that inflation. The great order activity confirms high sales in the first half of the year and momentum going into the second half. Orders are being driven by continued steady freight growth, which is straining carrier capacity. Freight rates and therefore fleet profits are growing, freeing up funds for expansion. The used-truck market supply is very tight, raising trade-in values. The new engines are getting higher fuel mileage, making trading up more attractive. All these factors are contributing to a superb market outlook in 2015. OEMs continue to struggle to expand capacity to keep up with demand. FTR just increased its 2015 Factory Shipment forecast to 320,000 trucks. For more info visit www.ftrintel.com/hdt or contact Eric Starks at (888) 988-1699.
